primary tones (2023)

Primary Tones is a multi-sensorial, collaborative installation which challenges the perception and spatial experience using a symbiotic association of colour and sound. Music and colour have the power to evoke an array of emotions and conjure unique memories. What does a colour mean to you? What does Red sound like? What does Blue feel like? What does Yellow say?

Without any guidance or suggestion, three individual sound artists/musicians respond to each of the three primary colors, resulting in a range of sound, medium, and pacing.  These three unique audio creations are further metabolized into a visual and spatial installation focused on light and social gathering typologies. These outputs culminate in an installation with each a  unique audio, visual, and organizational experience, resulting in what we describe as ‘TONES’.

A second installation commissioned by Little Brown Jug, the Primary Tones BEACONS shines brightly above the LBJ patio and streetscapes of Hargrave ave. Building off the concepts explored in the “Primary Tones” the BEACON’s will be an interlocking abstracted display of translucent sheets in our primary colours as a celebration and experiment of layered light and colour.
